Lisa Ziven and Dakota Solt are relatively new to retail, but they’ve quickly built up a strong following. That’s partly because of their Crybaby Presents platform (launched last year), which provides artists and designers a space to exhibit and sell. But it’s also for their house label, Crybaby, now in its fourth collection. “The way we had started this collection was thinking about classic silhouettes, for example very seventies silhouettes,” Ziven says of the 16-piece Fall ‘12 Tartan Tuesdays collection, so named for the tartan in the collection. “The use of unexpected textile combinations and the specific attention to detail add an element of surprise to each piece,” Solt adds.
Part of that surprise comes from the fabrics themselves, which are deadstock from around the city. “Sometimes we find exactly what we had in mind, and sometimes we find something that is really special that we hadn’t even thought about,” Ziven explains. And then sometimes special things find them. This July, Vans tapped the pair to collaborate on a limited edition.
