Marie Turnor's limited edition Fall '13 bagsBeth Goodman’s handbags, which she designs under the label Marie Turnor, may look like rolled-up paper sacks, but in fact they’re a marriage of classic shapes, Italian leather, clean lines, and functionality. “I had been traveling in Europe and remembered seeing a chic Parisian woman carrying a folded paper bag,” the designer says of the initial inspiration behind her California-produced line of accessories, which she launched in 2009. It was that unfussy appeal, or, as she puts it, “the timeless functionality of something so simple,” that struck a chord with her. The result is a range of accessories that’s devoid of ornamentation and hardware. Launched with only the picnic clutch (an homage to that Parisian paper bag), a wallet, and an envelope clutch, the collection has now expanded to include the Dinner, Snak, Feast, and other larger bags (the Rendezvous and Bak-Pak) that continue to play off her signature.

The Picnic group—a series roll-top clutches in a variety of sizes and leathers—has put her on the map, and this season she’s launched a limited-edition range of jewel-toned suede versions (a new material for the designer), that debut exclusively above. “The designs utilize the beauty of the materials as well as highlight the juxtaposition of masculine and feminine,” Goodman says of her design aesthetic. And as the demand has grown, so too have Marie Turnor’s meal plans. More fabrications, textures, and styles are set (think cross-body and oversize weekender bags, iPad cases, and men’s styles), and the designer hinted at a few collaborations on the horizon—in other words, stay hungry.

With prices starting at $117, Marie Turnor bags are available on the brand’s website.
