The Site To Hit Before You Hit The Beach

Unless you happen to be Gisele Bündchen, looking effortlessly beach chic can be tricky. That’s where Beach Tomato—the new Web site from U.K.-based luxury travel company Black Tomato—comes in handy.

Black Tomato co-founder Tom Marchant and his girlfriend, former British Vogue editor Kirsty Hathaway, were on a remote beach in Brazil when the idea came to them. “A day of the sun and a couple cervezas later, we realized that there was no go-to site that collated and curated the best beaches in the world,” Marchant says. “To add to that, fashion and beauty have such a strong relationship with the beach—what to wear and how to look good.”

The result is Beach Tomato, an online lifestyle magazine, edited and styled by Hathaway, featuring the best of coastal culture. The site offers advice on the hottest sandy destinations, extensive style guides (a suitcase’s worth of goods for 48 hours in Barcelona, above, Cape Town, or Beirut), and fashion editorials of swimwear and beach-friendly garb.

Admittedly, there’s a commerce angle involved—a quick trip over to Black Tomato is all you need to book the vacations you’ll read about on Beach Tomato—but the site is stylishly designed and comprehensive enough that no one could cry foul. Add to that Marchant’s enthusiasm for all things sand and surf. His favorite beach? “If I was to combine all my favorite beaches and make one ultimate beach, it would be the smells and sounds of Boston Bay in Jamaica, the serenity of Baia dos Golfinhos in Brazil, the adventure of Skeleton Coast in Namibia, and that perfect time of day to see a sunset from Coral Beach on Isle of Skye in Scotland,” the avid surfer tells Style.com.
