Hanako Maeda’s latest lineup for ADEAM was inspired by the iconic cherry blossom. “In Japan, the flower has a unique duality because it is celebratory and signifies the coming of spring,” the Tokyo-born designer told Style.com. “But it also represents the ephemeral nature of life, because the blooming period is so short.” The new Resort collection depicted the cherry blossom’s full growth cycle, beginning with a series of cheery ivory- and blush-colored pieces, like a satin sheath featuring a kimono-inspired neckline (similar to the one Maeda herself was wearing at the presentation), as well as a sharp smoking jacket with twisted lapels and a cool pair of pleated leather shorts. The season’s reference played out literally as a print on chiffon maxi dresses, and several evening numbers came embellished with tiny sea-glass beads that evoked morning dew. Maeda also captured the cherry blossom’s melancholic side with black looks, including an updated tracksuit cut from delicate French lace backed in organza, and a functional hooded raincoat with perforated leather insets. All in all, it was an impressive outing for the up-and-comer, who’s proven she’s one to watch. The lookbook pictures, shot by Sophie Elgort (that’s right, the daughter of Arthur), debut on Style.com.
