Of course Stella McCartney would enlist a troupe of synchronized swimmers for the debut of her Spring ‘13 collection for Adidas. That’s just what you do when you launch a sportswear range during Art Basel Miami Beach. Held at an opulent mansion on Biscayne Bay, the presentation featured water ballet, Adidas by Stella McCartney-clad models posing in speedboats, and a few mermaids playing volleyball.
“This is my first time at Art Basel, and I’m so glad we did this in Miami: The sun and light here fit in so well with the collection,” said McCartney. The collection, which featured Running, Swim, Yoga, Studio, Cycling, and Tennis ranges, popped under the Miami sun, thanks in part to its vivid palette of cherry red, coral, and lilac, along with some leopard and botanical prints. The range embraces technology, offering featherweight multicolored running shoes and rashguard surf tops, plus breathable fabrics made with Climacool techniques, but McCartney seemed most pleased that the collection was in line with her do-right ethic. “Sports and sportswear keep pushing the technology, and unlike luxury fashion, you don’t have the waste, chemicals, and killing of animals,” she said. “Sports brands have to answer to people, which is so in line with what I do. It’s never about the money or the PR; it’s about what feels right.”
