Yves Saint Laurent has exerted a strong pull on moviemakers. In 2010, he was the subject, along with partner Pierre Bergé, of Amour Fou, Pierre Thoretton’s documentary. Now he’s getting the biopic treatment, courtesy of director Bertrand Bonello (House of Tolerance). And for the role of Yves? French actor Gaspard Ulliel (Hannibal Rising, A Very Long Engagement) who has done a few rounds on the fashion circuit as well—for Chanel. Karl Lagerfeld selected Ulliel to front Chanel Bleu for Men, and Lagerfeld, as any devoted fashion historian knows, maintained a well-publicized rivalry with Saint Laurent during the ’70s. Could this latest box office turn send Ulliel spiraling out of the Kaiser’s favor?
