Dame Vivienne Westwood, who has frequently used her runway to agitate for causes she believes in, including climate change issues and the environment, has taken up a new fight: In support of Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. In a recent blog post, Westwood displayed a picture of herself wearing a T-shirt with her own visage (albeit with tamer hair than usual) and the tag “I’m Julian Assange.” The shirts, which are now on sale on her Web site, go for $65 and benefit the man Westwood calls, somewhat controversially, “a real hero.” (Assange is currently seeking asylum in London at the Ecuadorian Embassy, where he has stayed for months to avoid extradition to Sweden to face questioning about alleged sexual offenses.) Westwood visited Assange there, where, she says, he’s in need of fresh fruits and vegetables. “I took him some booze and he said ‘that’s what everyone brings me, but what I’d really like is an apple or something,’” she told the U.K.’s Independent. “He’s eating those dreadful microwave meals. I took him a bottle of red wine because that’s my favorite.” No word on whether she also brought an I Am Julian Assange shirt for the man who actually is Julian Assange.
