Since his appointment to the top spot at Yves Saint Laurent, Hedi Slimane has operated under a veil of secrecy, peering out only occasionally to rile up the masses with name changes and the like. But soon we’ll say hello to his version of Saint Laurent Paris on the runway, in one of the season’s most anticipated shows. Style.com editor in chief Dirk Standen interviewed Slimane in the middle of his fashion sabbatical, when he was taking photos, visiting music festivals, and generally considering his next move. Their Future of Fashion interview is a great refresher for Slimane’s return. “I like the ritual, the liturgy of a well-crafted, emotional fashion show,” Slimane wrote, back in 2010. “I will never be jaded with this side of fashion. The ‘catwalk’ is pure anthropology, something like an esoteric encrypted parade.” His own parade will take place on October 1. And his fashion? “Fashion somehow, for me, is purely and happily irrational,” he said. He offered an indelible equation for it, too: “Fashion = music + youth + sex.”
