Flying under the Frieze radar last night was jewelry designer Solange Azagury-Partridge, who threw a little soirée to celebrate both the opening of her eclectically designed new shop on Carlos Place in London’s Mayfair neighborhood and the launch of her five-piece collection Metamorphosis.
Attendees included Suzy Menkes, Laura Bailey, and Charlotte Dellal, with whom Azagury-Partridge collaborated with on a range of shoes for Spring ’14. The new collection is—depending on one’s take—sculpture or very extravagant jewelry cases. Each piece is a jewel “box” in a different shape that doesn’t just sit pretty: They all carry wearable charms that are instantly covetable. Included are Through the Keyhole, Azagury-Partridge’s imagination of her ideal boudoir, with elaborate enamel walls, a disco “floor” made from strips of precious stones, and a mirrored globe covered in diamonds. The Secret Garden carries charms like the flute-playing Greek god Pan, an orange tree, and a garden bench. The Ark and the Covenant, The Snake Pit, and Eternal Feminine complete the collection, and each carries a treasure trove of goodies—a skeleton, a giggling baby (below), a Horus eye, and a shoe.
Next on deck for Azagury-Partridge will be a shop in Paris’ Hotel Costes—coming soon. But right now, she is enjoying her new self-designed space that is an extension of her own entirely unique aesthetic. With extraordinary details throughout, including an eye-popping bright striped carpet and an emerald green painted room, the designer is at peace—and in nesting mode. “I really feel like I am in the right place right now, like I’ve come home.”
