Deadly Ponies

New Zealander Liam Bowden began making one-off leather goods and jewelry in his garage. Today, his brand Deadly Ponies has earned a global cult following for its famously supple bags, all of which are handmade in the label’s Auckland workshop.

Past collections have drawn inspiration from the American Old West and Día de los Muertos. The brand’s latest offering, dubbed Sand Castle, finds its footing elsewhere—albeit an equally arid locale. “Our new collection is inspired by a convergence of sand, spice, and sultans, a touch of Persian royalty,” Bowden told Style.com. “Texture is always a big draw card for us, and this season we have developed our new Dry Brush deer suede.” Sand Castle’s other materials include goat fur (especially stunning in saturated cobalt and juicy tangerine hues), some of the butteriest deerskin leather we’ve had the pleasure of encountering, and a bubbled, glossy black lambskin.

The bags are classic without being fussy, edgy without being trendy, and come in sizes that should suit everyone from the minimalist (the Mr. Cub Fur) to the weekend adventurer (the Mr. Porter Tote). And while its “Deadly Ponies” moniker is, perhaps, unorthodox, the brand’s prices are surprisingly nonlethal—bags range from $290 to $880.

Deadly Ponies is available at Space519 in Chicago, Acrimony in San Francisco, and online at www.deadlyponies.com.
