Orla Kiely has had a lifelong love affair with pattern. “I sometimes think that my brain works in repeat. I love the order and regiment of repetition, and how anything and everything can be patterned in this way, as if you are looking at the world through a prism or a kaleidoscope,” she wrote in the introduction to her aptly named book Pattern. This season, the Irish-born, London-based designer (who just so happens to be an official member of the Order of the British Empire) set her heart on hearts, and incorporated the universal symbol—in a variety of ways—into her new Resort collection, which was inspired by perennial sixties icons such as Françoise Hardy and Jane Birkin. You’d have to be, well, heartless to resist some of the sweet pieces here, including belted shifts and slim trousers featuring a flocked velvet micro heart print, as well as jacquard skirt suits that incorporated the shape into a glen-plaid check. Swingy trenches that gave off a slightly retro vibe and cute crop tops and matching briefs rounded out the lineup.
