Motherhood, The Roitfeld Way Mar 11th 2013, 14:03 Before welcoming her first child, Romy, into the world last May, Julia Restoin Roitfeld knew next to nothing about babies. “I hadn’t even babysat before,” laughs the 32-year-old mom. “But I just tried to embrace pregnancy, have fun with it, have fun with the way I dressed, and celebrate it. And it gave me wings.” In fact, she’s so enjoyed every aspect of her maternal experience that she’s started a Web site about it. Launching today, Romy and the Bunnies (named for her daughter, who’s amassed quite a few bunny accoutrements; she also liked that it sounded like the name of a sixties rock band) is an editorial platform about relishing the joys of motherhood. “I wanted to merge my occupation as an art director with my new discoveries about being a mom,” Roitfeld told Style.com. The site will feature everything from interviews with interesting mothers to daily updates from Roitfeld to drawings of her and Romy by fashion illustrator Lula of Herself magazine. “I didn’t want to post pictures of my baby, but I wanted to show how much fun I have getting her dressed, so Lula made her into a little character,” said Roitfeld, noting that her favorite Romy looks are “tiny pajamas” from Makié. One of the stories she’s most excited about will teach new moms how to re-create that pregnancy glow “in five minutes, with a baby in your arms.” Given her lineage (she is Carine’s daughter, after all), it’s safe to say that Roitfeld knows a thing or two about mommy chic. “You need to have basic pieces in your closet that you know are going to work, because you don’t have time to put an outfit together,” she advised, adding that black is always a safe bet. But, style tips aside, she stresses that there’s a charitable aspect to the site, too. For the past few months, Roitfeld has been working with the Smile Train, an organization that helps children with cleft palates. “For $250, you can pay for a child’s surgery. That’s how much we spend on a pair of shoes,” she says. There’s a donation link on the site, and Roitfeld encourages readers to contribute “whatever they can.” She adds, “Waking up in the morning and seeing my baby’s smile is the best thing in the world, and I want to help give that to other parents.” —Katharine K.
