Label: Delpozo, designed by Josep Font
Need to Know: Madrid-based label Delpozo made an impressive New York fashion week debut with an intimate show staged at a sun-drenched penthouse space in Chelsea. After founder Jesus del Pozo passed away in 2011, the established Spanish fashion house (also known for its line of perfumes) tapped Josep Font as its new creative director. In just two seasons, Font has completely revamped the Delpozo name. His “prêt-à-couture” designs were getting attention from influential editors and retailers (all eyes were on Lauren Santo Domingo when she entered the room in an ivory topcoat from Font’s debut Spring ‘13 collection, which was picked up by Moda Operandi), so the company decided to step up its international presence by showing during NYFW.
The Fall lineup explored architectural shapes and interesting volumes that occasionally brought Cristobal Balenciaga to mind. A salmon-colored, embellished top with sculpted sleeves looked futuristic yet classically elegant when paired with a deep burgundy pencil skirt and matching elbow-length gloves. Exaggerated cap sleeves and scalloped pleats, which were echoed throughout, gave the collection a structured fluidity. At a preview, Font explained that he found curved lines more interesting than straight ones. He brought the soft side out of sturdy wools but also worked in delicate chiffons. The two vibrant finale gowns with dramatic trains made a convincing closing statement and suggested a bright future for Delpozo.
