Peter Som alums Marina Polo and Britt Cosgrove launched their contemporary label SVILU (short for sviluppo, which means “growth” or “development” in Italian) for Spring ’13. The designers are following up their praiseworthy debut with a sophomore collection that evokes prep-school uniforms and Ivy League campuses. The duo went the extra mile and actually shot the lookbook at Yale University’s Peabody Museum of Natural History (those taxidermied grizzly bears seen in the background (above) really make the tartan plaid jumper dresses and varsity jackets pop). Polo, who attended Central Saint Martins and apprenticed at Lesage in Paris, and Cosgrove, who previously worked in VIP public relations for brands such as Prada and Hogan, are focused on making approachable, everyday pieces “that will take you anywhere.” Canvas pants with clever tuxedo details have “as many pockets as we can sneak in,” said Cosgrove at a preview this week. The entire collection is made here in New York City from sustainable materials, including recycled wools and cottons. It’s difficult to argue with environmentally friendly fashion. It’s also difficult to argue with an adorable logo like the SVILU porcupine. “We really wanted a fun but badass mascot to stand behind,” they said.

SVILU is currently sold at specialty boutiques. The Fall collection retails for $110 to $850. Visit SVILU’s Web site for more information.
