Danh Vo Wins The 2012 Hugo Boss Prize Nov 2nd 2012, 14:32 It’s nothing new for fashion companies to support the art world, but few put their money—literally—where their mouth is like Hugo Boss. The German label is the patron of the biennial Hugo Boss Prize, which since 1996, has given an award of $100,000 and a show at New York’s Guggenheim Museum to a working artist—a list that has included Matthew Barney and Rirkrit Tirvanija. What you need to know about 2012 winner Danh Vo: The Vietnam-born, Berlin-based artist creates installations and assemblages that riff on memory and identity. He’s organized his grandmother’s possessions, from her TV set to her washing machine to her crucifix for a show in 2009, and more recently dedicated himself to creating a reproduction of the Statue of Liberty in copper—disassembled, but to scale. Vo’s Statue of Liberty pieces (above) have traveled from his Paris gallery to the New Museum’s triennial last winter to the Shanghai Biennial.
