Prabal Gurung For Target: A Love Story
Oct 23rd 2012, 12:16

In this age of high/low collaborations, being asked to create a collection for Target has become something of a milestone marker in a designer’s career. At long last, Prabal Gurung has reached that point, and, he admits, he’s been dreaming about it for quite a while. “My first-ever designer Target piece I bought was Proenza [Schouler],” the designer tells Style.com. (Gurung created two pieces for the Neiman Marcus + Target Holiday collection, but this is his first full-fledged effort for the retailer.) “I was still in school at the time and I remember telling myself that one day, I hope I get to do this—I remember it so vividly. I have thought about this collaboration for the longest period of time.”

The look of the 80-piece collection of women’s clothes, jewelry, shoes, and bags is right on point with the Prabal brand, full of graphic prints and bold colors. And naturally, he based it all upon love, a theme that seems to be a constant point of inspiration for the New York-based designer. “I was looking at my own personal journey. I started with zero, nothing, and now am doing this collaboration with a major brand like Target,” he says. “I am a product of love and support from the fashion industry, so I thought, ‘How do I make it a story about love?’” In particular, he fantasized over the Prabal woman’s milestones in romance, like the first kiss, the first date, etc. “I imagined this girl and the diary she kept during that time, and then right before she got married, she went back and read it. It is literally her journey—it is kind of where I am in my career today,” says Gurung. In keeping with this romantic theme, the collection hits stores right before Valentine’s Day (February 10). Here, in this Style.com exclusive video, see some of the gorgeous prints and pieces and watch Gurung talk about his latest project.
