Fast fashion collaborations are a dime a dozen these days, but the forthcoming Maison Martin Margiela for H&M collection might just be one of the most intriguing ones yet. Mainly, that’s because the pieces are inspired by the label’s greatest hits from throughout the years—the Martin era, included. “It was quite a long process going through the entire archive collection,” the Maison representatives tell Style.com. “Ultimately, we wanted something that most fit into our key themes; they are really eternal basics.”
“Basics,” in Margiela speak, include a nude bodysuit with a black integrated bra top, invisible footwear, a candy clutch embossed with barcodes to look like a giant candy bar, or a duvet cover-turned-puffer jacket (starting at $12 and going up to $399). The house’s design team (the label’s elusive namesake designer is no longer connected to the brand) structured the men’s and women’s looks around the MMM core values, exploring themes like ambiguity, transformation (a leather dress, which looks just like a car seat cover, anyone?), and of course, oversized proportions. Longtime MMM devotees will be especially pleased to see a jacket similar to one that appeared in the very first collection. What would the legend himself make of this MMM-meets-mass retail moment? “We think he would be thrilled to see Margiela fashion come alive on a much bigger scale. We are a democratic fashion house and H&M is exactly that by definition.” The clothes go global November 15, but before then, the Swedish retailer and MMM will debut them at a private party in New York tonight. There won’t, however, be a traditional runway show. Instead, they’ve enlisted the help of noted choreographer Anne Teresa de Keersmaeker and a team of dancers to show off the clothes during a performance, along with a host of art installations throughout the multi-floor space on Beekman Street, where the Proenza Schouler show and a slew of other fashion events took place this season. “We can’t go into a ton of detail, but at the end of the dance performance, the pieces of clothes will be left as part of live art,” the Maison explains.
