Named after the year Gabrielle Chanel first used diamonds in her jewelry, 1932, Chanel’s new 80-piece fine jewelry collection is a celebration of the French house’s remarkable founder. Perhaps nothing is more symbolic of that than the inclusion of the lion in this collection, which also features the label’s jewelry signatures like comets and stars. (The lion was not only Chanel’s favorite animal but her star sign—she was a Leo, born August 19.) There’s a lion atop diamond comets on two of the sautoir necklaces and on a ring. Another highlight in this glittering, 80th anniversary traveling collection, which is set to be unveiled to editors in New York tomorrow, is the Etoile Filante, which is a reinterpretation of the original Comète necklace. Since the great Chanel always liked to change the way she wore her jewelry, sometimes putting a necklace in her hair or a brooch on her shoulder, the large diamond star on this sautoir shooting star necklace can be removed and worn elsewhere. Not to worry, pearls (which were Karl Lagerfeld’s focus this season—”just pearls, pearls, and pearls and that’s all,” he told Style.com at the show) made it into the collection, too. Perhaps the most exquisite is the Céleste brooch, which features a 79-carat baroque cultured pearl from Australia. Here, Style.com has an exclusive first look at some of these one-of-a-kind pieces.
