The Fat Radish Sprouts In Paris

New York’s Fat Radish is a fashion-set favorite, so it makes sense that when the fashion crowd headed for Paris fashion week, owners Phil Winser and Ben Towill decided to come along, too. The Radish team will host a pop-up version of their Lower East Side restaurant in Marc Grossman’s Marais café, Bob’s Bakery, from September 26 through October 2, in collaboration with Jenny Capano and Tara Gilson’s new creative agency The Sporting Project.

The cafe will marry the cultures of its native and adopted homes. Winser, Towill, and the Fat Radish’s executive chef, Nicholas Wilber, have been venturing to Paris’ markets every morning to get the freshest local produce for their vegetarian five-course set menu (très New Yorkais), which will be paired with French wines (very Paris). “The French are very traditional in their service,” Winser added. “For example, the waiters are in ties, white shirts, and aprons. They’ve always been about amazing-quality food, but the way it’s presented is very different from what we do in New York.” By way of contrast, the Radish experience is all about good, simple, locally sourced food—plus tattoos, no dress code, and family-style eating.

Menu items will include grilled cheese and organic tomato soup, mushroom ceviche, and spelt risotto with kale pesto, washed down with Champagne or Mimi’s Beer, which is brewed in the Rhone Valley by designer and vintage store owner Laura Marciano. The space features the usual Radishdecor, like stacked vegetable crates and community tables garnished by Chief’s gingham napkins. And in between courses of the €85 set dinner, Kate and Patrick Dougherty will treat diners to their Family Band experience—essentially, an elaborate photo booth complete with a full set, props, and costumes. The photo concept? “Gentleman farmer.”
