Label: Clover Canyon by Rozae Nichols
Need to know Some may recall Rozae Nichols’ romantic-boho eponymous line, which shuttered its doors in 2010, and yesterday, the Los Angeles-based designer made her comeback with the debut of her first Spring 2013 collection as creative director of the year-old brand. Focusing heavily on hand-cut digital prints, the ensembles read East L.A. by way of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas(whimsical cannabis leaf and “acid trip” paisley prints played a big role), while her homage to classic Americana appeared in trompe l’oeil Formica wallpaper and On the Road motifs. Highlights? Androgynous soft suiting embroidered with hand-laid crystals recalled a young rockabilly Elvis, while neoprene frocks and taffeta raincoats with “pedal to the metal” Chrysler prints nodded to the designer’s Made in U.S.A. mantra.
She says: “I was obsessed with the idea of a Southwest road trip,”Nichols explained. “The desert highways, sleazy motels, and of course Elvis—he’s the spirit of the South.” On her new, more youthful aesthetic? “I’ve been doing this for 25 years and I wanted to do a collection that’s relevant to today. It’s really all about the fun now.”
Where to find it: Net-a-Porter, Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus, and other select retailers.
