A Manolo Moment
Aug 22nd 2011, 19:28

Footwear designer Manolo Blahnik has been in the business since the early seventies. Over the decades, there have been ups and downs, of course, but through it all, the man and the brand have achieved the status of a modern classic. The return of the pointy-toed pump for Fall has arbiters—Footwear News among them —calling it a Manolo moment. Blahnik himself demurs. “I have never had a perception about whether it’s my time or someone else’s time,” he told the paper. “I don’t think I have a time.”

If a Manolo is forever, though, that doesn’t mean now isn’t a very good time to indulge. The Blahnik classics look fresh once again, and Style.com’s senior market editor, Marina Larroude, highlighted many of them in her Fall 2011 Accessories Index. For fall, there are concessions to trends in the form of plaids, leopard prints, and the season’s must-have fur-trimmed sandal, but our favorite is the ankle-strap pointy pump, a ladylike standard that’s hallmark Blahnik. Dare we say it? Timeless.
