A Timely Facelift For Barcelona's Nineteenth-Century Shopping Mecca

Barcelona’s Passeig de Gràcia is the city’s Madison Avenue or Champs-Élysées, the address of choice for designer shops from Burberry and Chanel to Loewe and MaxMara. It’s also the home of Santa Eulalia, the multi-brand boutique that’s been a city fixture since 1843. The store has recently undergone a massive transformation at the hands of William Sofield, the architect and interior designer who has worked on spaces for Gucci, Bottega Veneta, and Yves Saint Laurent, as well as properties like New York’s Soho Grand Hotel.

The renovation aimed to preserve the old as well as introduce the new, and many of the existing structures, as well as much of the furnishings (largely from the 1940’s) were conserved. Motifs from the Art Deco store logo appear throughout, on vitrines and racks. The men’s floors downstairs, including a massive suiting section with exclusives from brands like Kiton, are largely intact, though a glass window opening onto the tailoring atelier is a new addition. The women’s floor upstairs houses a new café, terrace, and pop-up space (which has hosted temporary shops for Maison Michel and, currently, Castaner).

But while Castaner currently represents Spanish design, the store’s offerings skew toward the European and the American. Balenciaga, Celine, Lanvin, and Proenza Schouler are the biggest sellers, according to a salesperson, and this Fall, Santa Eulalia will be one of the only places in the city you’ll find Tom Ford’s womenswear.
