Tank magazine’s fashion director, Caroline Issa, has always been on our list of chic industry girls. She has a clear, established personal style that doesn’t disappoint, so we weren’t surprised to see her looking incredibly fashion-forward at the shows last season. But it is worth mentioning that she always manages to mix what, for others, would be hard-to-wear separates, with ease. Here, she paired Burak Uyan fur boots with a bright, printed Mary Katrantzou T-shirt and body-hugging leather leggings. Recreate her look with pieces from Joseph, Rag & Bone, and more, below.

Dec 27th 2012, 22:54

The New Year is just around the corner, but before we move on to 2013, we pause to celebrate a few of the fashion-world innovators who passed away this year. Below are some of the legends to whom we said goodbye.

Anna Piaggi
A muse to many (Karl Lagerfeld, for instance) and a source of intrigue for all, Anna Piaggi, with her Stephen Jones hats and endless, eccentric ensembles, was the original street-style star. A contributor to the former Vanity magazine and a presence for decades at Vogue Italia, Piaggi lit up the fashion scene with her signature gloves and cane, sometimes blue, sometimes violet hair, maquillaged face, vast knowledge, and unstoppable wit. Piaggi died in August at the age of 81.

Vidal Sassoon
Having coined the phrase “If you don’t look good, we don’t look good,” Vidal Sassoon revolutionized the world of coiffure with his five-point haircut—the one worn by a young Grace Coddington, and that helped make Mia Farrow famous. An enduring force in fashion, Sassoon died in May at the age of 84.

Donna Summer
There are few who didn’t love to love, or at least love to dance to, Donna Summer. Forever a disco queen, the star churned out hits like “Last Dance,” “I Feel Love,” and, of course, “Love to Love You Baby.” We lost the legend to cancer last May. She was 63.

Helen Gurley Brown
At the age of 90, Helen Gurley Brown, the world’s most famous Cosmo girl and the woman who helmed the title for three decades, passed away this summer. Her frank discussion of sex within the magazine’s pages forever changed the face of Cosmopolitan, and her editorial work, as well as her then-risqué 1962 book Sex and the Single Girl, helped to shape a generation.

Whitney Houston
Whitney Houston, the six-time Grammy Award-winning superstar, died tragically in February. Though in later years her personal struggles with husband Bobby Brown and drug abuse tended to eclipse her work, her chart-topping hits, like “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and her rendition of Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You,” helped to define R&B for a generation.

Tony Scott
English director Tony Scott, famed for blockbusters like Top Gun and Enemy of the State, died in August after an apparent suicide. As our editor in chief, Dirk Standen noted in his farewell piece, his moody film, The Hunger, was a constant source of inspiration for the fashion set.

‘Tis the season for post-holiday discounts. But while you’re shopping the sales in Midtown, or returning that sweater from Aunt Sally that didn’t quite tickle your fancy, we suggest taking a peek at Barneys’ new vintage boutique. Launched in November, the well-kept secret stocks hard-to-find items like vintage Birkin, Kelly, and Chanel bags and eighties and ninties gold jewelry from YSL (a giant Egyptian-style gold necklace was our pick), Chanel (like kitschy gold bag-shaped earrings, belts, and bracelets) and Givenchy (a pair of gold disk clip-ons was particularly appealing). Tucked away in a quiet corner on the Madison Avenue flagship’s main floor, Barneys’ treasure-trove of vintage wares is basically a nineties Carlyne Cerf de Dudzeele shoot come to life (left). And there’s a healthy price range, too, starting around $250 for earrings and skyrocketing above $20k for a gently (or in some cases, never) used Hermès bag.

Style File: The Year In Tilda Lindstam

Style File
thumbnail The Year In Tilda Lindstam
Dec 27th 2012, 12:51

In the modeling biz, 2012 was the year of Tilda Lindstam. The Swedish stunner walked more Spring runways than any other model (68 in all, including hard-to-land turns at Calvin Klein, Versace, Céline, and Givenchy), and has been keeping the momentum up with key pre-fall bookings (Alexander Wang, Prabal Gurung), a spate of editorials, and confirmed spots in forthcoming ad campaigns for Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, and Valentino. Like Julia Nobis, who was the top catwalker in terms of stats the previous season, 20-year-old Lindstam can wear a couture gown with the ease of a sweatshirt. Meanwhile, her quirky-casual off-duty outfits—often a Lower East Side thrift-store mix—have captured the attentions of Tommy Ton and other street-style photogs. Chances are we’ll be seeing even more of Tilda at the Fall shows in February.

You could call Style.com’s Tumblr the eyes of the site: It’s where the editors upload what we’re seeing, where we’re seeing it, instantaneously—no filter. At year’s end, we’ve gone back through the rolls to find the biggest hits, month by month, of our postings: what’s been liked, reblogged, commented upon, and loved. Newsweek—in print form—closes with it. The magazine will go digital-only in 2013; this week, the historic title released its last paper-and-ink issue, complete with hashtag coverline. The announcement a few weeks ago raised (again) the print-is-dead alarms, but 2012 wasn’t all bad for magazines. Several others did shutter, including Vogue Hommes Japan and Whole Living, but the year also saw the launch of Du Jour, M, and the relaunch of Best Life, as well as the late-breaking sale of i-D to Vice Media. Onward to 2013.

Dec 26th 2012, 18:40

Front-row fashion-watchers tend to be in one season, out the next, but one woman is a fixture: Suzy Menkes. Anyone who’s been to a show has likely seen the International Herald Tribune’s critic, her bangs flipped into that signature top-roll, typing away on her mini computer (long before any blogger picked up on the trend, it should be noted). She’s written over 1.7 million words for the Trib, where she’s served as fashion editor since 1988. She’s both a tough critic and a nurturing presence—or, to put it more bluntly, as Kate Moss did when speaking to the New Yorker, she’s “like a slightly mad auntie.” During the upcoming menswear shows at Pitti Uomo, Menkes will be awarded the Fiorino d’Oro, an honor given by the Municipality of Florence to individuals who have greatly contributed to social and cultural development. For anyone in need of a primer on Menkesism, a few key moments in her rise and illustrious career:

—Menkes attended her fist couture show—Nina Ricci—while living in Paris and studying dressmaking during her gap year between high school and university.

—While at university, Menkes would sneak into the Paris show venues at 5 a.m. and hide under the stage until she could creep out and watch the collections walk down the runway.

—In 1991, during a Michael Kors show in an apparently derelict loft, a piece of the ceiling fell on Ms. Menkes’ head. The mishap caused her to deem New York fashion week “second rate.” But there was a silver lining—the incident caused New York’s designers to show their future collections in a single, less dilapidated, location—Bryant Park.

—In the nineties, Menkes prompted what was, perhaps, one of fashion journalism’s earliest open letters when she declared that the classic quilted Chanel bag was “over.” The house took out a full-page ad in the Tribune in protest.

—In 2007, perturbed by Marc Jacobs’ infamously tardy Spring 2008 show (it began two hours late), and unimpressed with his collection, Menkes wrote a review titled “Marc Jacobs Disappoints With a Freak Show.” Naturally, a fashion feud ensued. Jacobs eventually attempted to make amends by leaving a Marc Jacobs T-shirt on Menkes’ seat at that season’s Vuitton show. The shirt featured a drawing of the designer and critic side by side, as well as a “love note.” The note she may have appreciated; the gift, maybe not. She famously refuses all gifts, saying, “I was brought up to believe a girl should never accept anything but flowers and chocolates.”

—In 2012, Menkes reached her latest pinnacle: animation. Disney artists created a cartoon Suzy to sit front-row for the festivities surrounding the Barneys New York and Disney holiday windows.

Fashion is shifting into another dimension—and it’s a holographic one. Following Burberry Prorsum’s hologram runway show in Beijing last April, we noticed some of our favorite designers turning out Space Age ready-to-wear and accessories that really attract the eye. Blumarine’s iridescent Fall 2012 collection and Proenza Schouler’s revamped PS11 bag come to mind. Stella McCartney also dabbled in futuristic finishes, using them on clutches, sandals, and tech cases. Below, we’ve rounded up some of our favorite pieces from Eddie Borgo, Chalayan, and more.

Kristen Stewart Fashion Choice: Faux Pas or Fantastic?

Kristen Stewart walked the red carpet of the On the Road premiere in New York City last night, but for once the Internet isn't abuzz over her status with Robert Pattinson.

But rather over what the heck the actress was wearing for the event.

Yes, she's donning Christian Louboutin on her feet... but the two-piece, retro, sheer top and bottom? Can't say we're a fan.

Michael Jordan Banned From Golf Club For Wearing Cargo Pants
Nov 29th 2012, 14:06

Michael Jordan may have popularized baggy shorts in the NBA, but he was reportedly banned from an exclusive Miami Beach golf club for not putting them on.

His Airness refused to change out of his cargo pants and got the boot. Seriously.

Michael Jordan Golfing

Playing with a member at La Gorce Country Club, Jordan defied a dress code by wearing cargo (multi-pocketed pants) and denied requests to change out of them.

The greatest basketball player ever was asked to adhere to club attire - bermuda shorts - during the round, but continued to play in pants, and was told to leave.

Michael Jorda, 49, was then banned; La Gorce says he will not be invited back.

Wow, that's one golf club with balls ... see what we did there?

Kim Kardashian Visits Kuwait, Wears Weird Outfit

Following controversial comments she made this month about the Middle East, Kim Kardashian has touched down in Kuwait.

The reason?

To bank well into the six figures for an appearance at the opening of a Millions of Milkshakes store there, of course.

But instead of ridiculing the cause, we'll focus on the outfit instead. What the heck is this thing? Who ever said random cut-outs were sexy? And, seriously... a milkshake store opening in Kuwait?!?!?!?!?

You're not gonna believe this, but Kim Kardashian recently posed for French fashion magazine Factice and the lingerie photos that resulted from the shoot are quite revealing.

If you're a Kim fan, they're nothing short of ogle-worthy.

  • Kim Kardashian: HOT Photo!
  • Kim Kardashian is Hot

The cover girl for the new issue isn't covering much.

Kim's sexy spread includes garter belts, lacy lingerie, a pearl necklace (yeah, yeah), fur wraps and sky-high heels. Kanye is buying 1,000 copies right about now.

"Here are the inside shots from my cover issue of Factice Magazine, shot by Vijat Mohindra," Kim blogged. "I'm so pleased with the way the shots turned out."

"This was such a glamorous, feminine shoot and it was an honor to work with Vijat."

And an honor, as always, to increase Kim's celebrity by posting them, while simultaneously wondering how she got so famous. The cycle is not un-paradoxical.

Anyway, hot stuff! Click to enlarge more Kim Kardashian photos below:

Shania Twain Catsuit Wows Fans in Concert Comeback
Dec 4th 2012, 12:06

Shania Twain made her concert comeback in Las Vegas after an eight-year hiatus, wowing a sellout crowd with her hit songs - and form-fitting catsuit.

The audience gave Shania, who looks unreal for 47 or any age, a standing ovation as she cruised onto the stage on a motorcycle dressed like this:

  • Shania Twain Cat Suit
  • Shania Twain Catsuit

"Thank you. Thank you so much. You guys are going to get me all emotional, and then my eyelashes are going to fall off," Shania said to the Caesars Palace crowd.

Pretty sure no one was looking at her eyelashes at that moment.

With her attire conjuring up images of performers from Britney Spears and Jennifer Lopez to Katy Perry and Rihanna, we're going to go out on a limb with this statement:

Shania Twain's still got it. Man, she feels like a woman.
